The second largest city in Ohio, Cleveland was home to more than 433,000 residents as of July 2008, reports City-data.com. Because of its large population, the city has become a center for education. In addition to its four-year schools such as Cleveland State and John Carroll, Cleveland is home to a number of vocational schools that offer certificates and degrees. Through their many programs, these schools prepare students for careers in a number of industries, including health care and auto repair.

    • Established in 1969, Ohio Technical College is in downtown Cleveland about a block from the Soldiers and Sailors Monument. With more than 750 students, the school typically limits its class sizes to 25 to offer individualized attention to all students. The school offers two-year associate degrees in automotive fields such as collision repair, diesel engine repair and classic car restoration. A one-year master's of welding certificate also is available. Courses are offered during daylight hours, Mondays through Thursdays to allow students to work on the weekends. The school offers housing for students for an additional room and board fee. State and federal financial aid are available for qualified students, and the school offers career placement assistance.

    Hondros College

    • With a combined enrollment of 35,000 students throughout all of its locations, Hondros Colleges operates branches throughout the state of Ohio, including its Cleveland campus located south of downtown in the Independence neighborhood of the city. The school offers two-year associate degrees in real estate and registered nursing as well as a one-year certificate program in licensed practical nursing. Hondros also provides pre-licensing courses for those hoping to gain state credentials in appraising, home inspection, insurance sales, mortgages and securities sales. Students in the nursing or real estate associate programs can apply for state or federal financial aid to offset the cost of tuition.

    Bryant & Stratton College

    • Among its schools throughout the Great Lakes Region, Bryant & Stratton College has a branch in downtown Cleveland. The school grants two-year associate degrees in accounting, criminal justice, electronics, information technology security, medical assisting, office administration, business, paralegal studies, computer networking and business. Three-year accelerated bachelor's degrees are also available in business, criminal justice and information technology. The school offers advising, tutoring and mentoring as well as career placement services.

    • Founded in 1993, Cleveland Industrial Training Center is a vocational school that provides certificates in CNC manufacturing, the process of using computers to power machinery used to make products or parts. Programs last about five months and are offered four days per week in the mornings or evenings. Job placement assistance is available for graduates.
