Cogswell College in Silicon Valley has more than 100 years of academic history and specializes in digital arts, fire science and engineering programs. FESHE recommends students with an interest in fire science in Arizona, Nevada and California to attend Cogswell College.
The College of Engineering and Applied Science of the University of Cincinnati offers an Open Learning Fire Service Program designed to satisfy the needs of full-time and part-time firefighters who wish to combine their work with a distance learning bachelor's degree in fire science. The University of Cincinnati is the only university in the United States and Canada to offer both an associate's degree and a bachelor's degree in fire science. This program serves firefighter students in Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota and Wisconsin.
The Western Illinois University at Macomb, Illinois, provides a fire administration minor as part of its technology department program. It serves firefighter students in the states of Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas and Missouri.
The University of Memphis, also known as University College, provides a fire science undergraduate program for firefighters and engineers who wish a greater understanding of the fire science facets of engineering and technology. The university serves students in the states of Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, South Carolina and Tennessee.
The other three universities recommended by the U.S. Fire Administration are the University of Maryland University College, the Western Oregon University and the SUNY Empire State College. All of these universities and the ones mentioned in sections 1 to 4 offer some kind of distance learning option for firefighters and those without the time to pursue a full-time bachelor degree.
