Surgical Technician Courses in Indianapolis, Indiana

Working in a fast-paced environment under the direction of registered nurses and medical surgeons, a surgical technician performs a variety of vital supportive tasks before, during and after operative procedures. The U.S. Bureau of Labor reports that the demand for professionally trained surgical technicians, also referred to as surgical technologists, will grow by at least 25 percent through 2018. According to the Commission on the Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP), there are four accredited schools in Indianapolis, Indiana that offer courses in surgical technology.

    • The Ivy Tech Community College has several locations throughout the state of Indiana in addition to its Indianapolis campus, including Lafayette, Muncie, Evansville and Columbus. An Associate of Applied Science degree with a major in surgical technology is offered that combines both general education courses in the liberal arts and sciences with specialized instruction in all aspects of surgical assisting and technology. Course topics include medical terminology, microbiology, pharmacology, medical law and ethics, surgical procedures and clinical applications.

    Harrison College

    • An Associate of Applied Science in surgical technology is available at Harrison College. Students complete general education coursework in English composition, psychology, presentation skills, computer applications and professional development along with didactic and practical training in medical science, surgical assisting techniques and operative procedures. This program culminates in an internship at a professional surgical facility.

    Clarian Health Partners

    • The Clarian Learning Alliance at Clarian Health Partners offers an 11-month full-time surgical technologist training certificate. This three-semester program consists of theoretical and practical coursework in medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, patient care, medical ethics and law, surgical instrumentation and applications, operative techniques and procedures, laboratory applications, professional development and communication skills. A professional clinical practicum is also required.

    National College

    • In addition to locations in Ohio, Tennessee, Kentucky and Virginia, the National College offers an associate degree in surgical technology at its Indianapolis campus. Students receive both theoretical classroom instruction and extensive clinical training in all aspects of patient care, surgical preparation, operative procedures and sterilization principles. Coursework includes transport and support systems, medical terminology, surgical procedures and technology, human diseases, pharmacology and microbiology.
