How to Train New Paramedics

A paramedic provides ALS (advanced life support) to patients who have suffered a sudden injury or onset of an illness. A paramedic can administer medication per a physician's orders and supply patients with intravenous solutions. A paramedic stabilizes patients and provides basic medical services like CPR and dispensing oxygen until the ambulance arrives at the hospital emergency room. Paramedics usually arrive on the scene of an emergency in an ambulance, while "first-responders" are typically fireman, police and EMTs (emergency medical technicians).

Instructions

    • 1

Enroll students with proper credentials. Instruct only high school graduates or GED recipients. Ensure that paramedic students have certification as an EMT (emergency medical technician). Learn that EMTs can benefit from at least one year of hands-on experience as an EMT with a private ambulance company performing basic life support services, like administering oxygen.

    • 2

Secure a mastery of English composition in students for report writing. Instruct them in basic math to compute dosages, ratios and measurements is also essential. Teach the application of scientific notation, square roots and logarithms in respiratory therapy.

    • 3

Speak to students about human anatomy and how it responds to sudden injury. Teach them how to assess the nature and cause of injury or illness quickly to give patients appropriate, and in some cases, life-saving care. Instruct new paramedics on how to maintain the cardiovascular, nervous and respiratory system of an accident victim or other patient.

    • 4

Advise students on the best way to treat injuries to different parts of the body. Ensure that they know how these injuries affect the rest of the body. Cover basic human physiology and the way tissues and organs react to injury and illness

    • 5

Coach beginning paramedics about treating patients with cardiac problems. Train paramedics to read electrocardiograms, use a defibrillator and administer oral, intravenous and intramuscular drugs to cardiac patients. Relate the proper dosages and contraindications of heart drugs.

    • 6

Train EMTs on the correct way to examine a patient. Give them the necessary skills to look for symptoms of epilepsy and other diseases. Instruct paramedics on how to deal with patients in labor and how to deliver babies.

    • 7

Take students to the city morgue, hospital emergency rooms and psychiatric units to familiarize them with all aspects of emergency medical care. Enroll students in an internship with the morgue or other medical facility for hands-on experience.

    • 8

Complete the student's training with an internship in a hospital emergency room. Give them experience in a hospital delivery room, neonatal clinic or psychiatric unit so they have an idea of all the situations they might encounter while on the job. Schedule students rides on ambulance to assist with patient assessment and treatment.
