The Royal Academy of Music is part of the University of London. Founded in 1822, it's considered the oldest music college in the UK to offer a degree. Famous alumni range from classical performers such as Sir Simon Rattle, to pop stars such as Elton John. The academy tops the Guardian University Guide 2010 list of music schools.

The Royal College of Music is set in a striking 19th century building in London's South Kensington area. The college is one of the oldest music conservatories in Britain. It was founded in 1882. Previous students include stage musical composer Lord Andrew Lloyd-Webber. The university also houses a museum containing old musical instruments.

Trinity College of Music is housed in an old naval college overlooking the Thames River in Greenwich, East London. It has only occupied this building since 2001. Main auditions for entry are held in November and December, with an initial application deadline of October (in 2010). University faculties include Jazz, Early Music, Strings and Keyboard.

Guildhall School of Music and Drama is listed as the second-highest-rated music university in the 2010 Guardian University Guide. The school is situated next to the Barbican, an arts and performance venue in Central London. Over 800 students are enrolled in the university in 2010. Guildhall also offers specialist courses in opera. A 609-seat concert hall is scheduled to open at the university in 2012.
