Jobs for Overseas Trained Teachers

Teachers seeking an international experience can travel abroad and teach English. Various programs are designed specifically for setting teachers up with opportunities. English is the most common language used for communication in the business world, so many international parents want their children to speak English so that they can have an advantage in the international marketplace.
  1. English Teaching

    • Trained teachers can travel overseas and teach students English. The teachers rely on their native English speaking skills to accurately teach foreign students how to speak English. Agencies locate schools that have shortages of English speaking students. Various countries, such as Japan, recruit English teachers directly through various programs such as Jet and Aeon Corp. These programs set teachers up in a subsidized apartment, commute expense reimbursement and a bonus when the teacher completes the contract. Teachers are expected to show professionalism, creativity and enthusiasm. Those with experience speaking the languages predominantly spoken in the country they are working for will have an advantage, but this credential is not necessary. Teaching experience is also typically preferred.

    Australia

    • Australia often has a shortage of teachers. As a result, teachers can choose to teach abroad in an Australian school. Teachers can choose to work either as a permanent, temporary, contract or casual teacher. Casual teachers can be on-call to teach and earn extra money when an Australian school has a shortage of teachers. Some Australian schools have teachers cover a broad range of subjects, while other Australian schools have the teacher specialize in a specific subject. Teachers are paid based on their experience. The application process for an Australia teaching job varies from school to school.

    Great Britain

    • Great Britain also often needs teachers. Normally, before the teacher begins the position, the teacher must be assessed. However, teachers who are qualified to teach in places such as Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland can teach in England without any prior assessment. Those lacking a qualified teacher credential will teach as an unqualified teacher and will receive a lower salary. Teachers get the qualified teacher credential by applying to the Training and Development Agency for Schools.

    Placing Agencies

    • Prague, Czech Republic, has an English teaching certificate course and lands teachers contracts very quickly after completing the training program. Students completing the teaching program land jobs in one of 42 countries. They can teach in countries ranging from Japan to Austria and from France to Qatar.

    Nonprofit

    • Nonprofit organizations within the United States can help Americans find teaching jobs overseas. TIE, for example, serves as a location where overseas schools can post teaching opportunities for qualified teachers. The majority of the schools that TIE sets teachers up with are private for-profit schools in which the parents have a large degree of influence over the education of the students.
