How to Find a Job as a Student in a Foreign Country

If you want to spend part of your undergraduate or postgraduate years studying and working abroad, you usually need to participate in a student work exchange program. These agreements exist between the United States and certain, but not all, countries. For your plans to come to fruition, you must carefully follow established procedures well in advance of your anticipated travels.

Consult with your school advisor early on about studying and working in the foreign country of your choice. Understand that some countries may not participate in student work exchange programs. If that is the case, you will not be given a student work visa and will be unable to do any type of work in that country.

Visit the Council on International Educational Exchange Web site (ciee.org) for further information about obtaining a student work visa in participating countries.

    • 3

Consider teaching English abroad if you are fluent in another language.

    • 4

Keep in mind that au pair positions can at least provide you with free room and board in a foreign country. Obtain information about the availability of such positions through your university.

Contact the Peace Corps for its volunteer requirements and assignments around the world if you want to be part of an adventure.
