Master's Degree Options

U.S. Census Bureau statistics cited by WorldWideLearn note that master's degree holders will earn $2.5 million over a 40-year career, compared to $2.1 million for bachelor's degree holders and $1.2 million for high school graduates. Master's degrees are awarded to students who complete up to three years of study; the degree may be pursued solely for intellectual enrichment, as a means of career advancement or in order to prepare for a Ph.D. program.
  1. Master of Arts

    • The Master of Arts degree is one of the two main types of master's degrees awarded to students in the U.S. It is focused on topics in the humanities and social sciences; students in MA programs will typically complete at least 30 credits of graduate-level coursework. A thesis or final project may also be required. At the University of Chicago, students in the MA program in humanities take nine courses in areas such as English and art history and submit a thesis at the conclusion of the three-quarter program.

    Master of Science

    • Students pursing advanced study in the natural sciences or technology can enroll in a Master of Science program. These programs, offered in areas such as engineering and computer information systems, usually mirror MA programs in terms of credit hours required. However, MS candidates may need to meet additional research or project requirements which prepare them for doctoral study or the workforce. Students in the Master of Science in Biotecnology program complete projects while taking courses in areas such as drug discovery and molecular technology.

    Specialized Master's Degrees

    • While master's degrees in subjects such as English, art history, or engineering fall clearly into either the MA or MS category, other degree programs may not be as easily categorized. Examples of these specialized degrees include the Master of Social Work, Master of Public Administration and Master of Business Administration. In addition to taking coursework relevant to the degree, students in a programs such as a MSW or MBA may be required to complete an internship or practicum that provides them with real-world experience needed for success in the workplace following graduation.
