Master's Programs in Architecture in MA

Massachusetts offers several graduate programs in architecture, all of which offer an accredited professional architecture degree. Most state architect licensing agencies require professionals to have earned an architecture degree from an accredited program, so Massachusetts’ various programs are well suited to students seeking licensure.
  1. Boston Architectural College

    • Boston Architectural College (BAC) offers a five-year residential Master of Architecture (M.Arch) program and a distance M.Arch program for architecture professionals who want to continue their profession wherever they live while completing their graduate coursework online. BAC uses a concurrent model of learning, so students are employed in supervised design firm positions at day and attend classes and study in the evenings. The New England Association of Schools and Colleges and the National Architecture Accrediting Board (NAAB) accredit BAC’s architecture programs.

    Harvard University

    • Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design offers two graduate degrees in architecture. The Master in Architecture I, an accredited professional master’s degree, takes at least seven terms to complete. Students with a pre-professional undergraduate degree in relevant topics may be granted “Advanced Standing,” allowing them to enter the program with third term standing. The Master in Architecture II is a “postprofessional” degree “intended for individuals who have completed a five-year undergraduate professional program in architecture or its equivalent,” according to Harvard’s website. A minimum of three full-time terms of study is required for the Master in Architecture II degree.

Harvard also offers three master’s degrees in landscape architecture: the Master in Landscape Architecture I, a professional degree; the Master in Landscape Architecture II, a “postprofessional” degree; and the Master in Landscape Architecture in Urban Design, also a “postprofessional” degree.

Massachusetts College of Art and Design

    • Massachusetts College of Art and Design offers a full-residency Master of Architecture program that will lead to professional architect licensure in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The master’s program can be completed in one of two tracks, Track I or Track II. Track I is designed for students with undergraduate degrees in disciplines other than architecture, providing students with a broad base of theoretical background before they join with students in Track II to complete the program. Track I takes seven semesters to complete. Track II, a four-semester program, is designed for students who have already earned an undergraduate degree in architecture. Two accrediting boards accredit all the school’s programs: the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, and the National Association of Schools of Art and Design.

    Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)

    • MIT’s Department of Architecture offers five graduate degree programs: Master of Architecture, Master of Science in Architecture Studies, Master of Science in Building Technology, Master of Science in Visual Studies and Master of Science Without Specification, which is intended for doctoral students who decide to pursue a master’s program instead. Applicants to the MIT Graduate School of Architecture may not apply directly for the Master of Science without Specification program.

The Master of Architecture Program is MIT’s professional master’s degree, accredited by the NAAB. The Master of Science in Architecture Studies is a non-professional degree in which students may choose one of five focus areas: Islamic Architecture; Architecture and Urbanism; Building Technology; Design and Computation; and History, Theory and Criticism of Architecture and Art. The Master of Science in Building Technology in an interdisciplinary program for “graduate students interested in the development and application of advanced technology for buildings,” according to the MIT website. The Master of Science in Visual Studies is also interdisciplinary, where students can choose to focus on the intersections between critical art theory and architecture.
