Special Education Diagnostician Certification

A special education diagnostician assesses at-risk children through specialized tests, collecting history and background information about the child and determining if the child is in need of specialized services. To become a special education diagnostician, you will need a number of qualifications.
  1. Teaching Certificate

    • The teaching certificate is required, earned either through an undergraduate or graduate program. Candidates will also need to complete state testing and a background check before a license is granted.

    Teaching Experience

    • Most school districts require applicants to have at least three years of teaching experience.

    Master's Degree

    • Nearly every state requires their candidates to hold a master's degree before they qualify for a license as an educational diagnostician. Normally the master's degree requires between 30 and 40 credit hours of coursework.

    Testing

    • Many states require their educational ddiagnosticians to have completed a state-approved examination before they can apply for licensure.

    Job Outlook

    • This position is likely to grow in the future because many students are diagnosed each year with learning disabilities.

    Salary

    • The salary range depends upon the school district as well as the diagnostician's educational background and years of experience.
