Western Governors University has a bachelor of arts degree program in special education that is administered online. This program focuses on learning skills to teach students with mild to moderate disabilities and leads to teacher licensure. Seven areas of study make up this program and include liberal arts, demonstration teaching, foundations, foundations of special education, foundations of teaching, effective teaching practices and assessment, evaluation and management practices. Courses include education without boundaries, communications foundations, integrated natural sciences, reasoning and problem solving, diversity and inclusion and human development and learning.

Stockton College has a master of arts in education and special education certification program that offers students with teaching certificates a choice between five content specialization areas on top of the special education certification. These specialization options include a general track for kindergarten through fifth grade, language arts/literacy, science, mathematics and special education. The program can be completed on a part-time or full-time basis, but must be completed in no more than six years of study. All courses are offered in the evening and on weekends and courses include differentiated instruction, integrating technology into classroom teaching, survey of mild learning disabilities, survey of moderate and severe disabilities and developmental reading instruction.

The University of Michigan in Dearborn has a master of education degree program in special education that gives teachers, social workers and administrators three options in which to pursue this degree. The first option is the inclusion specialist certificate which is completed online with no on-campus requirements. The other two options are the learning disabilities (LD) and emotional impairments (EI) endorsements. These two options offer classes online, in the evening and in the summer with the adult student in mind. Courses include an introduction to learning disabilities, an introduction to emotional impairments, social and vocational transitions, special education law and litigation and counseling families of students with emotional impairments.
