Master's Programs in Mathematics in Massachusetts

While Boston, Massachusetts, is home to two of the top math and science schools in the world--MIT and Harvard--neither grants a master's degree in mathematics. The MIT program offers only a doctorate degree, while Harvard grants a master's degree only for those on the way to a Harvard doctorate degree. That said, a handful of well-known, well-accredited institutions in Massachusetts do offer master's degrees in mathematics.
  1. Boston University

    • Boston University has two opportunitiess for master's degrees in math.

Boston University has two options for students who want to pursue a master's degree in mathematics. The first is the combined bachelor's/master's degree, through which students obtain both degrees in mathematics by completing bachelor of art's requirements plus eight graduate level mathematics courses and examinations. The other option offered by Boston University is a master's in mathematics degree for those who already have a bachelor's degree. This can be obtained by taking such classes as History of Mathematics and Qualitative Theory of Ordinary Differential Equations.

    Boston College

    • Boston College aims to create a tightly knit community of math grad students.

Boston College's master's in mathematics programs works in two phases. The first is a core of classes all students in the master's program must take. Through this curriculum, students come to know other participants in the program and form a peer support network. The second phase of the program involves elective classes, which allow students to work towards specialization in the field. Student's wishing to study in a field not offered through coursework are permitted to do independent study as a one-semester class or two-semester thesis project.

The University of Massachusetts at Amherst

    • University of Massachusetts, Amherst offers a master's in applied mathermatics.

The University of Massachusetts at Amherst offers master's degrees in pure and applied mathematics. Students looking only for a master's degree in pure mathematics are not commonly accepted into the program; the degree is most often granted as a stepping-stone to a doctorate in the field. The master's in applied mathematics, however, is a program unto itself. This two-year degree is geared toward preparing students for a career in industry or business by teaching applied mathematics and scientific computing, and exposing students to mathematics-related subjects in science and engineering.
