How to Check If You Passed Your Entry Level Writing Requirement for UCLA

Prospective students at the University of California, Los Angeles must verify that they meet the school's entry level writing requirement before they can be enrolled at the school. This requirement ensures that incoming students are able to write an essay at a level suitable for research intensive college-level work. The entry level writing requirement can be met in several ways, including previous college-level coursework, passing scores on advanced placement high school classes and by taking and passing an administered writing exam.

Instructions

    • 1

Compare your college admissions test score to the minimum passing score at UCLA. ACT test-takers must score a minimum of 30 on the combined English/Writing test. For those who took the SAT, your score must be 680 or higher on the Writing section of the Reasoning Test.

    • 2

Pass an Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate exam with an acceptable score. High school students who take the AP exam must score 3 or higher. For the IB Standard Level English A test, UCLA requires a score of 6 or higher, while the score for the IB High Level English A exam must be a 5 or higher.

    • 3

Check your college transcripts if you are a transfer student with completed college-level coursework. To meet UCLA's guidelines, you must have earned a grade of C or better in a transferable college-level English composition class. Contact a transfer admissions specialist to make sure your class is transferable. Generally, English courses at the 100-level or above from an accredited college are accepted.

    • 4

Take and pass the UC Analytical Writing Placement Exam. The test is administered once per year in the spring to any incoming autumn freshman who has not otherwise met the writing requirement. You will receive a letter from UCLA if you need to take the exam. Once taken, your score will be available in late June through your MyUCLA account. Activate your MyUCLA account with your name, birthday and UCLA ID number to access your score.
