How to Know If You Passed the NCLEX

The National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) administers two different National Council Licensure Exams (NCLEX): one for practical nurses (NCLEX-PN) and another for registered nurses (NCLEX-RN). The two exams are taken at a computer station at a designated testing center. While the exam is scored immediately, test takers cannot know their score at the testing center, because the computer's scoring needs to be verified elsewhere. Once students receive their score, they must meet a certain passing standard.
  1. Results and the Passing Standard

    • Once a student finishes her exam, she must wait 48 hours before she can learn anything about her score. After 48 hours, unofficial, unverified scores are available on the Pearson Vue website. These "quick results" are not available in all states and cost a small fee to access. After six weeks, official verified results are available and are mailed to students. A student's score is reported in terms of "logits," and a student must meet or exceed a certain pre-determined passing standard. The NCSBN updates these standards periodically. The RN and PN versions of the exam have different passing standards, with the RN requiring a score of 0.00 logit and the PN requiring -0.21 logit as of 2014.
