How to Make School or Work Your First Priority

Setting school or work to be your first priority is largely a matter of proper scheduling combined with a disciplined approach to maintaining that schedule. You can do so by creating a careful schedule that allows enough time to dispense with school and work activities, while setting aside time for any other priorities in your life. From there, the key is simply maintaining your set schedule, dedicating yourself to keeping school and work at the top of the list even as you deal with other unrelated matters.

Make a list of all of your responsibilities. Include everything on the list that you're committed to participation in, from work to classes to organizations in which you're a member. If you have a family, include them in your list as well. Also include recreation or miscellaneous.

    • 2

Go through your list and write down the amount of time you devote to each activity. Be generous with your listed times, as its best to place too much time for an activity than too little and find yourself rushed or unable to tend to your commitments. Make certain your time expectations are realistic. For every hour of class time set aside 2 hours study time, and make certain you factor in training schedules into your work time or any other outside work activities that are mandatory.

    • 3

Arrange your list of responsibilities by importance in priority. Place school or work at the top and go from there. Make sure recreation and miscellaneous is towards the top of your list. You won't be able to keep school or work as your first priority if you burn out on it due to a lack of downtime.

    • 4

Create a schedule, working your way down from the number one priority item of work or school to the last in the list. Use a large time sheet to schedule your activities, and mark down each using a separate color pencil so that you can tell at a glance when each activity is to occur. If you run out of scheduled time, then those remaining activities are those you should drop from your list.

    • 5

Stick to your schedule. Don't allow leakage between prioritized items. If something comes up, deal with it during your miscellaneous time. By following your schedule, you'll avoid distractions that will interfere with your work or school time.

    • 6

Make emergency plans for dealing with situations that may interfere with work or school. Cultivate a support system of family and friends who will help you stay on task by assisting you when time is short in order to get you back to your regular schedule.

    • 7

Recognize distractions as they occur. Turn off the television or telephone when studying, keep outside work interests for after work and concentrate on work-related tasks only during working hours. Maintain a clear separation between your work or school life and other activities at all times. Leave the work at work though, and once you've completed your schoolwork, move onto something else on your schedule.
