Where to Study Forensic Psychology

There are a number of forensic psychology programs available inside and outside the United States for interested master's and doctoral students. Attending a university is an enormous monetary, emotional and time investment. You will want to make sure that the college you choose has a strong psychology department. Other considerations include average class size, whether you want to study abroad and whether you prefer a rural or urban setting.
  1. U.S. Master's Programs in Forensic Psychology

    • The University of Denver offers a dual-degree program through its College of Law and Department of Psychology. Students can earn both a master's and a doctorate. The master's program places more emphasis on the legal aspects of forensic psychology, though students who wish to go on to a more psychology-focused doctorate are encouraged to do so.

You can earn your master's in forensic psychology at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice, affiliated with the City University of New York. The emphasis of this program is on psychology.

U.S. Doctoral Programs in Forensic Psychology

    • The University of Arizona, through its psychology, public policy and law program, offers a doctorate degree. The program trains career researchers in forensic psychology and law.

The doctoral program at Philadelphia's Hahnemann University was created to develop what their website refers to as "scientist-practitioners within law and psychology."

The University of Nebraska has two advanced programs that combine concentrations in psychology and law, but with different emphases: The master's program emphasizes law with a secondary concentration in psychology, while the doctoral emphasizes psychology with a secondary concentration in law.

Widener University in Chester, Pa., Florida International University, University of Illinois at Chicago, St. Louis University and the universities of Alabama, Kansas, Utah, Nevada, Texas and Virginia also strive to combine psychology and law studies for a more integrated approach that may lead to work in police departments, law firms or academia.

The Miami Institute of Psychology offers a doctoral program that focuses solely on psychology studies and, more specifically, the implications of cultural differences.

    Master's and Doctoral Programs Abroad

    • Monash University in Australia and the University of British Columbia offer master's programs in forensic psychology that combine psychology and law studies with some hands-on experience in courtroom settings.

By contrast, the doctoral program at Queen's University in Ontario, Canada specializes in forensic psychology studies with an emphasis in correctional psychology and real-life experience in correctional facilities.

Simon Frasier University in British Columbia offers students a choice of two forensic psychology doctoral programs: one similar to the programs at Monash University and the University of British Columbia, or one like the program offered at Queen's University.
