How to Survey a College Course

A college education is an important tool in creating a successful future. Whether you're fresh out of high school or returning later in life, there are so many choices available that it can be difficult to decide which path to take. Before you enroll in a full-time program, it's useful to know what's in store. Most colleges will allow you to survey, or audit, courses without being enrolled in a program. In exchange for a lower fee, you can take a course without receiving credit or a letter grade.

Instructions

  1. Surveying College Courses at Local Schools

    • 1

Research courses at your local colleges and universities. You can usually get a course catalog for free by contacting an admissions representative or by visiting the college website.

    • 2

Follow the college's procedures for registration. Some will require you to sign up as a special student or a non-degree student before allowing you to audit their courses. An admissions representative can assist you with this process.

    • 3

Ask for permission to audit a course. Sometimes you will have to get permission from the dean of the college or the professor who teaches the course.

    • 4

Pay your audit fees. The fees vary from one institution to the next. Some charge a flat audit fee while others charge a discounted fee per credit hour. Some colleges even offer free auditing to groups like the local elderly.

    • 5

Purchase books and materials for the course. To save money, check for used college textbooks online or at local used bookstores.
