How to Ship Textbooks

Shipping textbooks offers some challenges to senders because of the weight and bulkiness of the items and the potential for exorbitant shipment costs. Luckily, the U.S. Postal Service offers discounted rates for textbooks, which fall under the category of "media mail." This service is not the fastest way to ship books, but it is the most economical way to ship domestically, with delivery times usually in seven to 10 business days. Often, media mail arrives even more quickly if shipped to a nearby state, and you may send up to 70 lbs. for less than $30, as of January 2010.

Instructions

    • 1

Wrap each textbook securely in Bubble Wrap before mailing. Tape wrapped books together, with the largest book on the bottom and smallest book on top.

    • 2

Place a thin layer of packing peanuts on the bottom of a sturdy box. Lay the books on top of the packing peanuts.

    • 3

Fill the rest of the box with packing peanuts, leaving enough room to properly close and tape the lid, while ensuring the books are securely surrounded. Fold over the top of the box and shake. Add more peanuts or a layer of newspaper if the books are moving around.

    • 4

Include only a packing slip or small instruction sheet with the books. Do not include personal correspondence or any other items.

    • 5

Take the box to the post office and ask for media mail shipping if you are sending the box domestically. Add delivery confirmation or insurance if desired.
