How to Audit a Writing Seminar

Many colleges and universities offer their students the option to audit courses. Although rules and restrictions may vary by institution, auditing a class is usually when a student enrolls in a course, but doesn't receive grades or credits. Students often choose to audit a course in a field they're interested in, but which doesn't necessarily pertain to their major. A writing seminar is a useful course for almost any student, as the ability to write well is an important skill in almost any profession.

Instructions

    • 1

Obtain a course catalog from your college and review all writing seminars. Select the course that best fits your schedule. Depending on enrollment, most schools offer multiple periods of the same course.

    • 2

Contact the registrar's office and ask about the availability for each writing seminar. Writing courses are a requirement for some majors, so they can fill up quickly. Pick an alternate course if your first preference isn't available.

    • 3

Meet with your school's financial aid office. Although you're not receiving credit for the course, there are still costs associated with enrolling. Inform them that you're auditing a writing seminar and apply the additional costs to your tuition.

    • 4

Meet with your instructor. Explain that you're planning to audit their writing seminar. Develop an academic plan and discuss what will be expected of you during the term.
