Equine Degree Courses in the UK

In the United Kingdom the equine industry is growing rapidly and, as a result, it generates 1 billion pounds' worth of business per year. It is a very diverse sector that includes dressage, show jumping, racing, endurance and horse trials. Consequently there is a growing demand for people with degrees in equine studies. In the U.K. degree programs result in a Bachelors of Arts (BA) or Bachelors of Science (BSc) degrees. As they are vocational, equine studies courses are normally run through higher education colleges as opposed to Universities. They are three year courses which normally combine theoretical learning with practical experience.
  1. The Royal Agricultural College

    • The Royal Agricultural College offers a Bachelors of Science in Equine Studies. There are two pathways available, a science pathway and a management pathway. The former involves modules in equine health and welfare, breeding and genetics whereas the latter focuses on marketing and equine business management. Both pathways have 20 to 25 contact hours a week, include a range of core and optional modules and culminate in a dissertation. Entry requirements include a Foundation Degree or an Higher National Diploma (HND) with a merit.

    Myerscough College

    • Myerscough College is one of the U.K.'s leading institutions for equine studies. It offers three equine-related degree courses including a BA (Hons) Equine Management as well as two BSc's in Equine Science & Management with options to specialize in "Behavior and Welfare" or "Physiology." The Behavior and Welfare route includes modules on Breeding and Genetics, Equine Training and Animal Welfare Studies whereas the Physiology option entails Equine Therapy, Nutrition and Performance as well as Biomechanics courses. Both degrees are three year full time courses. The BA is not a full degree but is a one year top-up course with a vocational focus, combining academic lectures with practical project work. Throughout their degrees, students are encouraged to take Stages 1 to 3 of the British Horse Society Qualification.

    Coventry University

    • Coventry University, through Warwickshire College, offers a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Equine Business Management. This is a three year full time course. To enter, the course applicants must have 220 Universities & Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) points, which is the equivalent of two six unit A-Levels or a Business and Technology Education Council (BTEC) National Certificate. Additionally, applicants should have some prior equine experience. Students are assessed through assignment, examinations and coursework.
