Get some basic computer skills. Familiarise yourself with a word processing software, email-communication, file management and Internet research.
Search for an institution that offers access courses to nursing. You have a variety of facilities available, including your local college, an adult learning center, a university or online courses. Colleges and learning centers are usually located in your area and can be a more comfortable setting for someone who has not been in a classroom for some time. You may also choose to study through online courses, as they might be a more suitable option for you if you have a busy work schedule, combined with family commitments.
Visit your chosen institution's website and find out about the application process. Also get information about the duration of access courses to nursing programmes and the type of units offered. It usually takes a year or less to complete most access courses to nursing. Also, inquire about tuition fees, as many institutions have information about how to get financial help, student loans, and university bursaries. Note that you do not have to pay fees if you are under 19 years of age.
Complete the application form. Make sure you answer all the questions accurately.
Submit a personal statement. The personal statement allows you to explain the reason for your interest in access courses to nursing and how it will help you begin training to become a registered nurse. You may also use the personal statement to showcase any skills or qualifications you have.
Go to the interview. The interview is to assess your English and math levels, and determine if the programme is right for you. You should be ready to undergo a Criminal Record Bureau (CBR) check if you are chosen to start access courses to nursing.
