HRM (Human Resource Management) practices are known to affect diversity. They are the measures an organization puts in place to deal with its human resources. The type of HR practices put in place affect how diverse an organization is. Recruitment is one area that is of significance that could be researched. Some organizations, such as those in the media, are keen to have diverse workforces that represent the people they provide content to. Others might feel that a diverse workforce provides them with a competitive advantage as they understand what different groups of society want and expect from goods and services, so can market their offerings accordingly.
Governments have taken different stances as to how much of an issue diversity is within a country, and what role they should play in the context. A country culture that looks down on other groups can lead to conflict and a breakdown in society, so it is important that countries impose legislation that keeps people connected through the workplace. Research could look at the different approaches countries have taken and how successful or unsuccessful they have been. Perhaps stating that 10% of all organizations employees must be of a different nationality or religion has been effective or alternatively led to greater conflict or resentment.
You could look at the role of pressure groups that campaign for greater diversity, and the influence they have on both organizations and policy makers. Charities, community groups and trade unions all fall into the group. Research could look at the influence they have had over a set period of time and the way they have persuaded organizations to change their ways or influenced legislation.
There are many industries and job roles where people from diverse backgrounds are struggling to get to, despite organizations doing everything they can to encourage it. Examples include politics and higher education. One reason for this is culture and perception, due to which people feel unable to break convention and follow a career which they see out of their reach despite having the qualifications and know-how. Research could focus on a specific area, looking at why this is the case.
