Graduate Criminal Justice Programs

Students interested in criminal justice graduate programs can use their education to further their careers in law enforcement and criminology, or to supplement careers as attorneys. Many criminal justice majors also join agencies like the Federal Bureau of Investigation or the Central Intelligence Agency. There are dozens of graduate programs in the field and U.S. News & World Report magazine includes them in its famous rankings of academic programs.

    • The University of Maryland, College Park offers four graduate programs in criminal justice: a traditional master's degree, a joint M.A./J.D., a doctoral degree and a professional M.A. The joint program is in cooperation with the Baltimore campus' School of Law. Students must gain admittance to each program separately. The professional master's program is only offered at the school's China location. It is ranked as the number one graduate program in criminal justice by U.S. News & World Report.

    University at Albany---SUNY

    • The University at Albany---SUNY is second in the ranks of criminal justice graduate programs. It offers master's and doctoral programs including joint B.A./M.A. and M.A./M.S.W degrees. Students earn a master's in social work via the School of Social Welfare and obtain direct experience in the human services field.

    • The number three institution is the University of Cincinnati's School of Criminal Justice. It has the highest rank for research productivity. Its mission indicates that the school focuses on teaching, service and research. It offers three options for graduate students: a traditional master's, an on-line master's and a doctoral program. It also offers a post-baccalaureate certificate program in paralegal studies.

    • Penn State's Department of Sociology & Crime, Law and Justice is highly regarded by several organizations. The National Science Foundation gives it a top mark for research and development expenditures. U.S. News ranks it at number five overall and gives its demography program the top spot for criminal justice programs. The school does not offer a terminal master's degree and instead focuses its efforts on students pursuing a Ph.D.
