As a large public land-grant university, the University of Florida mathematics doctorate allows students to take full advantage of the school's sizable resources. Along with a traditional Ph.D. in the academic study of mathematics, students may choose to enroll in the Center for Applied Optimization, which combines financial mathematics with statistics. They may also study theoretical mathematics and physics through the Insitute for Fundamental Theory. Students in the Ph.D. program must complete 90 semester hours and demonstrate proficiency in mathematics and a foreign language, and prepare and present a dissertation. They must also teach for two semesters at the college level.

Doctoral students at Florida State University can concentrate in one of four areas of mathematics: pure, applied/computational, financial and biothematics. Applied and financial mathematics students tend to be well-situated for jobs in the financial sector, while pure mathematics students pursue further work in academia and the development of mathematical theory. All Ph.D. students must complete a certain number of course hours, pass a basic competency exam, and draft and defend a thesis.
