Research in biomedical, pharmaceutical, biotechnology and medical imaging technology takes place in the Industrial Doctorate Center, or IDC, at Oxford University. The course runs four years, and involves collaboration with other departments, such as mathematics, medical sciences and physical and life sciences. The course has a research component, in conjunction with commercial, industrial partners. It begins with taught modules, based on lectures designed to give students the technical and theoretical skills for work in the laboratory research environment. Students then go into laboratory environments with work on ongoing research projects. Following the laboratory work, students commence their own research projects, leading to the award of doctorate.

The classic department at Cambridge University, one of the oldest and most prestigious in the world, offers a three year, full time Ph.D. course, which is entirely research-based. Students must complete an 80,000 word thesis on the study of ancient Greek or Latin literature and art. At the end of the first year, students must submit written work, to demonstrate their ability to deliver work to the standard required for the degree. Where students need to acquire special skills, for example if a knowledge of archaeology or linguistics is needed, students have access to all undergraduate lectures offered by all departments in the university. The department can also provide instruction in areas such as the reading and understanding of ancient papyrus-based texts, and the linear B alphabet, the forerunner of the classical ancient Greek alphabet. Many completed Ph.D. theses become important works of reference used by scholars around the world, a measure of the degree of academic excellence expected of students on this course.
