Colleges That Offer Doctorate Degrees

If you're looking to broaden your career opportunities, consider earning a doctorate degree. A doctorate is an advanced degree that builds on the work conducted at the master's or, in some cases, the bachelor's level, and includes thesis projects and research papers. Colleges across the country offer doctorate degree programs in a variety of diverse disciplines.
  1. Towson University

    • Located near Baltimore, Towson University offers students the opportunity to earn doctorate degrees in information technology, occupational science, instructional technology and audiology. Although each program has its own requirements, all applicants to a Towson doctoral degree program must have at least a bachelor's degree and a minimum grade point average of 3.0, or a master's degree. The grade point average requirement may be waived for a candidate with at least five years of relevant field work experience.

      While enrolled at Towson, students have the opportunity to join a variety of academic groups, such as the actuarial science and risk management club, the computer and technology club, the exercise science club and a variety of major-related honor societies.

    Texas Tech University

    • Texas Tech University offers doctorate degree programs in just about every field of study. Students seeking a PhD will find specializations in geosciences, fisheries sciences, mathematics, agricultural education, zoology, petroleum engineering, hospitality administration, fine arts, human development and computer science. Texas Tech states that all applications will be considered, regardless of academic record. Requirements may vary per PhD program, but applicants are generally required to have a bachelor's degree and GRE or GMAT scores.

      In between dissertation work and studying, doctoral students may join some of Texas Tech's clubs, such as the National Society of Black Engineers, Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, United States Green Building Council, Human Factors and Ergonomics Society and the Education Graduate Student Organization.

    North Carolina State University

    • Students at North Carolina State University (NCSU) will find a large selection of doctoral majors, including aerospace engineering, plant biology, sociology, microbiology, toxicology, textile technology management, forestry, economics, electrical engineering, genetics, horticultural sciences and biomathematics. Doctoral programs begin with classroom learning, then move on to a written and oral examination. A majority of time is spent working on a dissertation, with a dissertation defense and oral examination taking place before graduation. Students have up to 10 years to complete their work.

      Doctoral programs at NCSU require a minimum of a bachelor's degree in the field of study, although many programs require a master's degree. Letters of reference, a resume, a personal statement and GRE scores may also be required. NCSU offers many academic-related student organizations to join, such as the Education Council, Accounting Society, Agronomy Club and the American Institute of Architecture Students.
