The Department of Computer Science and Automation at the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore has its roots in the Electrical Engineering Department, which set up a research group into Automatic Control in 1968. Since then, it has made strides in the computer science sector. Four of its faculty members developed the groundbreaking Simputer, described by the New York Times as the biggest technological innovation of the year in 2001. Although the doctoral program content is largely determined by the student's chosen area of investigation, there is a requirement for learners to take at least one mathematically oriented course in the first year. There is also a compulsory Perspective Seminar course during which students present a comprehensive survey of the area of work they have chosen to investigate. The DCSA offers a four- to five-year doctoral program that includes collaborative, individual, theoretical and practical components, giving students a holistic overview and knowledge of their chosen discipline.
