Income Limits for Hope Credit

The Hope Tax credit provides a way for individuals who are paying qualified education expenses either for themselves or a dependent to get tax credit up to $1,800, as of 2009. The guidelines for the Hope credit can change for each tax year, so check IRS Publication 970 for updated information.
  1. Income Limits

    • In tax year 2009, the maximum modified adjusted gross income that you could have to be able to claim the Hope credit was $60,000 for an individual return and $120,000 for a joint return. The tax credit phases out on a reduced scale for those earning between $50,000 and $60,000 on an individual return and $100,000 to $120,000 for a joint income.

    Projected Income Limits

    • The IRS has not released an updated Publication 970 with the new guidelines yet, but the projected changes to income limits include an increase in the limits to a maximum of $80,000 for an individual return and $160,000 for a joint return.

    Restrictions

    • Only those paying qualified higher-education expenses for themselves or a dependent can claim the Hope credit. Qualified expenses include tuition at an eligible university or other school, books, supplies, equipment and any required activity fees.
