Apply for a PIN. This is done as part of the FAFSA process (see Resources). You will need to provide your Social Security Number, some basic personal information such as your address, and select one of several "challenge questions" that will allow you to retrieve your PIN in case you forget it.
Complete your FAFSA application. Using the PIN number will result in quicker access to the results of your FAFSA, although it is possible to print and mail your application as well.
Visit the FAFSA Follow-Up website (see References). It is recommended that you visit this website one week after the application is submitted (two to three weeks if you printed and mailed documentation).
Enter the data as requested: Social Security Number, name, date of birth and the year you applied. The status of your application, indicating dates it was received and when it was processed, will appear.
Click "next" and enter your PIN as requested. If you have forgotten your PIN, you can retrieve it on this page as well. Your Expected Family Contribution score will appear. The precise amount of your Pell Grant, if you are eligible, is dependent on this score, the number of courses you are taking, and the cost of attendance at your school. Lower EFC scores result in higher Pell Grant awards; consult the Financial Aid Office at your school to determine your award.
