How Can I Check the Status of My Pell Grant?

Checking the status of your Pell Grant is easy once you understand where to find the information. When you apply for a Pell Grant for your education, you filled out a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form, which is done electronically. Your completed FAFSA submission generates a Student Aid Report, which outlines your eligibility to recieve a Pell Grant and any estimated amounts of aid the Pell Grant will provide for a calendar year. The school you submitted your FAFSA to will send an award notification to tell you how much your Pell Grant will be and when you can receive it.

  1. Review Your FAFSA Student Aid Report

    • 1

When you submitted your FAFSA application, you were given the option of printing the application and Student Aid Report. Read the Student Aid Report. The report will state if you are eligible for a Pell Grant and include an estimate of your grant award. Keep in mind this is only an estimate.

    • 2

If you chose not to print your FAFSA or your Student Aid Report when you applied, find your FAFSA PIN that you selected when you began your application. This is a four-digit number that you were assigned, so you could access your FAFSA securely online. Go online to the FAFSA website homepage and enter your pin to access your completed FAFSA and print the application, along with your Student Aid Report. Read the Student Aid Report to see if you are eligible for a Pell Grant.

If you are having difficulty with the FAFSA website or are unable to get a Student Aid Report after submitting your FAFSA, you can call them directly at 800-4-FED-AID or 800-433-3243. You can also access FAFSA's live online help from 8 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. (Eastern Time) Monday through Friday or 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. (Eastern Time) on Saturday. Or you can email FAFSA at [email protected] to get a written answer about your financial aid question.

    Checking with Your School

    • 4

Once your FAFSA is submitted, your information is provided to your school's financial aid office. Keep the financial aid telephone number to check on your application for the Pell Grant. Call the office and ask when it will have your application processed and make a note of the approximate date after your FAFSA has been submitted.

    • 5

Wait for the school to send you your student award letter, which tells you how much your Pell Grant award will be. Before you receive this letter, your school could select you for a process called" verification." If you receive a verification letter, submit all the financial information you submitted on your FAFSA in paper form, including copies of tax forms, utility bills, leases, property or stock information, and bank or welfare statements. If you are unsure what to submit or have no documentation, contact your school's financial aid office and schedule an appointment. Bring all documentation you have, including your FAFSA, Student Aid Report and FAFSA Data Release Number (DRN), which is printed on the lower left hand corner of your Student Aid Report.

When you get your student award letter, read it carefully. The letter will state how much your Pell Grant will contribute toward your education and when payments will be disbursed.
