How Do I Renew a FAFSA on the Web?

FAFSA is the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. It offers loans, grants, and work-study programs to help you fund your college tuition. While you can still go the old-fashioned route and fill the application out by hand, this option can take up to two weeks. The FAFSA application is available in both English and Spanish.

  • Current tax return
  • PIN number from last time
  • Approximately an hour of time
  • Social Security Number
  • Current bank statements
  • Any investment information
  • Untaxed income information (such as child support, veteran benefits, etc.)

      Get a PIN number. You will need a PIN number to submit a renewal FAFSA. If you can't find your PIN number, go to the website and select, "Request a Duplicate PIN."

      Download the "On the Web Worksheet" document. The worksheet previews the questions for the FAFSA application.

      Complete the FAFSA. Once you've completed the worksheet, go to the FAFSA website and enter the required information. Click the "Need Help?" button at the bottom of the screen for answers to common questions.

      Sign the FAFSA electronically. For the FAFSA application to be complete, it must be signed. Your PIN works as your signature.

      Print your FAFSA. Save a copy for your records.

      Follow up on your FAFSA application. Once you've submitted the application, check the status of the application, add or correct information, or view your Student Aid Report (SAR).
