How to Raise Money for an Internship

As a college student, an internship in your chosen field not only makes for useful work experience, but can increase your chances of employment after graduation. Unlike a normal job, however, many internships will not pay you a salary or hourly wage. While an internship has a wealth of other benefits, this does little for the very real dilemma of your food, housing and travel costs. Taking steps to raise enough money in advance will give you the necessary peace of mind to enjoy your internship.

Find a job. If you already have one, offer to take on additional shifts, or apply for a second part-time job if it does not interfere with your studies. Editing student papers, tutoring younger students or teaching foreign languages can also bring in some extra income. Put as much money as you can toward your internship savings each paycheck, making sacrifices where necessary. As an added bonus, these extra jobs will look excellent on your resume alongside your upcoming internship.

Check with your college or university to see if they offer unpaid internship scholarships and grants. Since many scholarships and grants are geared toward internships in certain fields, such as political science or publishing, apply only for those you feel you have a chance of obtaining. Prepare to fill out applications, write essays and ask your professors for recommendations. Your college or university's financial aid office can also point you in the direction of additional sources of funding.

Ask your family for money. Before you do, make sure you have a compelling case. Above all, show that you are serious about this opportunity and the experience, guidance and potential connections it may provide. While in all likelihood your parents may not be able to support you financially for the duration of your internship, they may be all the more willing to make a contribution toward your cause.

Sell things. If you are a little short of your goal, getting rid of your unworn clothing, unread books and other objects you never use can bring in a tidy sum. If you have to relocate for your internship, this will make packing for your trip a little easier. Put things for sale on eBay, advertise around campus or in the classified section of your local newspaper. Use the money you earn for those small yet necessary expenditures.
