This federal grant for veterans provides educational funding as well as housing for those with at least three months of service after Sept. 11, 2001. Only those receiving an honorable discharge are eligible. Approved programs under the bill include undergraduate and graduate degrees and technical or vocational training. In addition to tuition payments, tutoring assistance, licensing and certification test fees may be reimbursed. Tuition and fees are paid directly to schools but cannot exceed the maximum tuition at in-state institutions of higher learning. Veterans opting to go to more expensive schools may have the difference reimbursed.
This grant is available to veterans living in Illinois and limited to community or public colleges in the state. Those who qualify may use the grant for up to four years of full-time enrollment at the undergraduate or graduate level. Eligible candidates must have served a minimum of one year on active duty in the U.S. armed forces or the Illinois National Guard, or served in a foreign country during hostilities. Only those receiving an honorable discharge may qualify. Applicants enrolled at an Illinois public college must maintain the minimum grade point average required by the institution. The grant covers tuition and some mandatory fees imposed by colleges.
Veterans residing in New York State may be eligible for this award granted by the New York State Higher Education Services. The awards may be given to both full and part-time veterans attending a degree-granting undergraduate, graduate or vocational school in the state. Those enrolled in full-time study may receive an award up to the entire cost for state residents at the State University of New York, or the actual tuition, depending on which is less. The awards granted to part-time students are pro-rated according to credit hours. Part-time study is a minimum of three but fewer than 12 credits per semester, or six to 23 hours weekly in a training program at a vocational school.
