The Council for Higher Education Accreditation, or CHEA, recognizes two national career-related accrediting councils: The Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools, and the Distance Education and Training Council. These two accrediting councils, through peer review, accredit a number of schools that offer degree programs in medical billing.
The Distance Education and Training Council is approved by the U.S. Department of Education as a nationally recognized accrediting organization. As of August 2010, 10 institutions offering medical milling degrees and certificate programs were accredited by the council.
The Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools was founded in 1912. It is recognized by the U. S. Department of Education as well as CHEA. As of August 2010 there were 14 colleges offering occupational associate's degrees in medical billing.
Units earned from accredited colleges are more easily transferred to other institutions. Accreditation also ensures that colleges meet the high standards of quality education expected from the accrediting councils.
