Battlefield forensic courses are offered by the U.S. military to service personnel. The program takes 40 hours conducted over a period of several days and teaches participants the methods used to collect forensic evidence on the battlefield.
Military personnel in the army, navy and air force learn how to collect and preserve physical and biological evidence, obtain fingerprints for later analysis and take forensic-quality photographs, from a battle location. Students learn to process evidence, identify usable evidence upon processing and complete intelligence reports.
Trained members may become part of weapons intelligence teams (WITs) to extract evidence alongside explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) teams under the Counter-IED Defeat program. Forensic information collected and assimilated into trend and analysis reports can be used to help protect soldiers from improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in the field.
