Columbia State Community College is based in Columbia, Tennessee. This south-central middle Tennessee campus also has satellite campuses in Franklin, Lawrenceburg, Lewisburg and Clifton. CSCC was Tennessee's first community college, established in 1966.
Columbia State offers degree programs in more than 50 areas of study and has a faculty that is made up of 85 percent advanced degree holders. Students at Columbia State can choose from classroom or online study in many courses.
The school is also home to Tennessee Junior and Community College Athletic Association (TJCCAA) athletic teams in baseball, softball and basketball.
Nashville State Community College started in 1970 under the name Nashville State Technical Institute. The school offered five associates degrees and had its graduation in the parking lot on White Bridge Road in West Nashville, according to the Tennessee Board of Regents website.
Today Nashville State has flourished into a multi-campus community college with learning centers in Dickson, Waverly and Cookeville and a student enrollment of nearly 10,000. New additions to the main Nashville State campus will result in a 60,000-square-foot building to house financial aid, a food court, records office and more.
These additions will make more room for classrooms on the main campus. Students at Nashville State can choose from more than 60 associate degrees and nearly 20 technical certificates.
In the 1960s, Shelby State Community College and the Memphis State Technical Institute merged to form what is now Southwest Tennessee Community College. This college, located in Memphis, is the largest of the Tennessee Board of Regents Community Colleges and has seven campus locations in and around Memphis.
The school offers a wide range of associate degree programs, as well as professional certificate programs. STCC offers special programs in fine arts, criminal justice, allied health sciences, nursing, information technology, engineering technology, automotives and business. It also offers continuing education courses and seminars on various subjects.
Volunteer State Community College is located in Gallatin, Tennessee. The school offers learning centers in Livingston and Nashville, in addition to offering instruction at sites throughout a 12-county region of northern Middle Tennessee.
Vol State, as it is commonly called, offers associate degree programs in a wide range of subjects, as well as certification programs and continuing education opportunities. Like all Tennessee Board of Regents community colleges, Vol State credits transfer easily to four-year programs at TBR universities throughout the state.
