Held College offers an 18-month associate's degree in criminal justice/law enforcement administration and criminal justice/police science. Career possibilities with this degree include criminal investigator, customs agent, insurance investigator, corrections officer, and animal control agent, plus administrative support staff positions in law enforcement agencies. Some additional training may be needed for those who wish to join the police force.
Chaminade University of Honolulu is a private Catholic Marianist college. Its Division of Behavioral Sciences offers a bachelor of science in criminology and criminal justice. Although it is not a requirement to become a police officer in Hawaii, most officers in the Honolulu Police Department hold criminal justice degrees. Courses include crime scene investigation. Intensive law courses and internships at agencies are encouraged to allow students to get firsthand working knowledge of the criminal justice system.
Hawaii Community College offers an associate's degree in administration of justice. The two-year program includes the study of law enforcement, the court system and corrections and prepares the student to proceed to a four-year bachelor's degree. Students who complete 12 credits may also opt to complete the six-credit basic police recruit training required by government law enforcement agencies. Students may also work as interns in the administration of justice field to earn credits.
