An associate of arts in general studies degree allows the student who has successfully achieved this degree to enter careers in the fields of psychology, philosophy, history, literature, physical science, life science, math and statistics. Some of the required courses for this degree are English composition, public speaking, U.S. history, Western world literature, biology, chemistry, pre-calculus, calculus, psychology, economics and sociology. Students studying for this degree will develop key writing skills, interpersonal skills, critical thinking abilities, an understanding of U.S. and world history and knowledge of basic sciences and scientific method.
The associate of applied arts degree prepares students for careers as artists, curatorial assistants, commercial framers, art supply service representatives or entry-level or volunteer art instructors. Areas of specialization include crafts, photography or fine arts. Students partake in hands-on studio experience in darkroom photography, publishing and illustration programs, as well as art techniques. They will also learn the history of various art forms. Program coursework includes Fundamentals of Design, Western Art History, Introduction to Pottery, Digital Drawing and Painting and Introduction to Fashion Design.
The associate of arts and science degree prepares students to continue toward a bachelor's degree. Core requirements for this degree are in writing and mathematics and general knowledge in fine arts and humanities, math and natural sciences and social sciences. Students learn to demonstrate understanding of concepts, theory and knowledge of problems and activities, as well as become aware of diversity issues and problems as courses often place emphasis on cultural diversity.
Students who wish to achieve an associate of fine arts degree will complete first- and second-year art and general education courses, including art, communications, mathematics, humanities, social and behavioral courses intended to lead students toward a bachelor of fine arts degree. Careers in the field include commercial design, industrial design, interior design, fashion design, film and theater support, fine art, sculpture and printmaking, textiles, crafts and photography.
