Degrees in Theater Education

A bachelor's degree in theater education will allow you to teach drama to students in primary or secondary school. With a master's degree you will be able to teach at a junior college or university. In addition to learning about acting you may study set design, lighting, technical aspects of managing a theater as well as directing and scriptwriting.
  1. Illinois State University--College of Fine Arts

    • The College of Fine Arts at Illinois State University provides training to young actors, designers, dancers and educators.  The School of Theater offers a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science degree in acting, arts technology, design and production, dance, dance education, theater education and theater studies. The theater studies include cinema studies, creative drama, directing, dramaturgy/theater history, integrated performance and theater management. A Master of Arts in Theater is also offered as a part of the graduate programs.

    Emerson College--Department of Performing Arts

    • Emerson College is located in Boston, Massachusetts. The Department of Performing Arts offers both undergraduate and graduate programs for theater education. In addition it offers a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in acting, musical theater, stage and production management, and theater design and technology. For theater studies and theater education a Bachelor of Arts is offered. Recipients of the Master of Arts in Theater Education have the opportunity to be directors, playwrights, theater teachers and community educators.

    University of Northern Colorado--School of Theatre and Dance

    • The School of Theatre and Dance at the University of Northern Colorado was named "Colorado Program of Excellence" by the Colorado Commission on Higher Education. This department provides professional training to students who have the desire to work in professional theater. Degrees offered include a Bachelor of Arts in Theater Arts, concentrating on acting, designing technology and theater studies. The Bachelor of Arts in Theatre Arts has an emphasis on teaching secondary school. There is also a Bachelor of Arts in Musical Theatre, and Master of Arts in Theater Education.

    SUNY Potsdam--Department of Theatre and Dance

    • The Department of Theatre and Dance at the State University of New York in Potsdam offers a Bachelor of Arts in theater education, dance, and design and technical theater. It also offers minors in theater studies, design and production, and classical studies. The courses cover directing, choreographing, acting, designing and technical work.
