Enrollment in Ohio Colleges & Universities

As unemployment numbers climb, more people turn to higher education to secure a better paying job and job security. Many colleges and universities saw a spike in enrollment in 2009 and 2010. Students have a multitude of choices for state funded universities and private colleges in Ohio, and all have seen enrollments climb along with the unemployment rate.
  1. Ohio State University

    • Ohio State University has six campuses in Ohio. The largest campus is in Columbus. Smaller campuses are in Mansfield, Marion, Newark and Lima. The Agricultural Technical Institute in Wooster is also part of the Ohio State University system.

      Ohio State University had 64,077 enrolled students in fall 2010. Most of those students, more than 56,000, attended the Columbus campus. The other 8,000 students were enrolled at the other campuses. Lima and Newark set record high enrollments in 2010, with 1,530 and 2,562 students.

    Ohio University

    • Ohio University has six campuses and two satellite centers in the southeastern quarter of the state. In fall 2010, Ohio University had record enrollment of about 34,000 students. The main campus in Athens has the majority of the enrollment. More than 17,000 enrolled in undergraduate programs in Athens. More than 3,600 enrolled in graduate programs and 467 enrolled in medical degree programs at the Athens campus.

      The other 12,000 students were divided among five regional campuses and two satellite centers for Ohio University. Chillicothe, the first regional campus for Ohio University, enrolls about 2,000 students in 20 different majors. The Lancaster campus has 2,100 students seeking associate's, bachelor's and master's degrees. Ohio University's Eastern campus in St. Clairsville, Ohio University Southern in Ironton, the Zanesville campus and learning centers in Pickering and Proctorville enrolled the rest of the students.

    Kent State

    • Kent State University, with its main campus in Kent, Ohio, is a top rated and recognizable higher education school. Like other Ohio universities and colleges, Kent State reported an increase in enrollment in 2010, with 41,365 students attending in September 2010. This is an increase of over 3,900 students since 2009.

      Kent State University offers more than 200 majors and minors in undergraduate and graduate programs. Along with the main campus in Kent, the university has seven other campuses in northeast Ohio.

    • There are 13 state universities in Ohio, with 24 branch and regional campuses and eight technical colleges. Forty-six liberal arts colleges and universities are registered in Ohio, along with 24 independent non-profit colleges.

      In 2004, 474,136 students were enrolled in public higher education in Ohio. Public higher education includes state university main campuses and their regional branches, technical colleges and community colleges. Another 136,247 students enrolled in the 24 private colleges in Ohio.
