Wilkes-Barre Area Community Colleges

Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, which contains the city of Wilkes-Barre, has a single community college that serves the entire county: Luzerne County Community College, which is less than 10 minutes from Wilkes-Barre in Nanticoke. Completing classes at Luzerne County Community College can help you gain credits to transfer to the local four-year universities, including Wilkes University, Pennsylvania State University at Wilkes-Barre and King's College.
  1. Admissions

    • Luzerne County Community College admits new students, transfers, adult learners and concurrent high school students. All applicants must submit an application, which you can do online or in person. New students must submit their high school transcripts or a copy of their GED certificate to determine the need for placement testing. Transfer students from other colleges and universities must submit transcripts from their previous schools, which may help exempt them from placement testing. All students must provide proof of residency to determine their tuition rate.

    Programs and Majors

    • Luzerne offers 64 majors in 17 programs of study. These programs include automotive, business, computer information systems, English, hotel and restaurant management, mathematics, science, and technology and trade. Health programs include nursing, dental hygiene, dental assisting, surgical technology, respiratory therapy and emergency medical technology. The health programs have separate admission requirements, such as minimum GPA and placement test scores, which you must fulfill before you can be admitted.

    Tuition and Fees

    • Full-time students who reside in Luzerne County and take between 12 and 18 semester credits pay $1,545 in tuition per semester, as of March 2011. Full-time, out-of-county students pay $2,970, and out-of-state full-time students pay $4,380 per semester. Half-time tuition depends on the number of credits you take; it varies among $103, $198 and $292 per credit, depending on your residency status. Fees are charged when students change their course schedule after initial registration, withdraw from courses, apply for graduation, pay a tuition bill late or request duplicates of course schedules, receipts and other documents. Financial aid is available, including nine scholarships awarded yearly based mostly on merit.

    Other Features

    • Luzerne offers several courses online that start at various times throughout the semester. Tuition, course fees and prerequisites for these classes are the same as their on-campus counterparts; however, you must pay a distance-learning fee each semester you register for online classes. If you do not have a high school diploma or GED, you can take the Adult Learner Training and Assistance program at Luzerne to help you prepare for the GED tests, which you can take at Luzerne because it is an official GED test center.
