The Quarter System at Community Colleges

Some community colleges hold their courses in periods of quarters rather than semesters. Typically, the course material taught to students in both quarter and semester formats are identical. However, the main difference between the two systems is that quarters condense the course material into a shorter period of time, while semesters allow instructors and students to spread out coursework over a longer time span.
  1. Prerequisites

    • The quarter system allows community college students to complete prerequisite courses at a fast pace. Many areas of study, such as health and business programs, require students to take prerequisites before they are allowed to enroll in higher level courses. Thus, completing the prerequisite courses over one quarter can allow students to move to the higher levels in a shorter time.

    Fast-Paced

    • Quarters are shorter than semesters, so they can help community college students get through school faster. The courses, however, cover the same amount of information. Therefore, instructors will cover the material at a much faster rate, yet will expect students to complete the same amount of coursework. It tends to be more important for community college students working on the quarter system to attend all of their classes -- since the course material is so condensed, missing even one class can set them behind.

    Classroom Time

    • The actual length of a quarter varies according to each community college, but the total length of time that students are required to spend in the classroom is the same as for students attending schools run on semesters. For example, completing three quarters at a community college with 10 week quarters would be the equivalent of completing two 15 week semesters at a different college.

    Advantages

    • Students that are motivated self-starters will probably adjust to the quarter system at their community college easily. It is essential for students to make school a priority and be very dedicated to their coursework. The quarter system can also be an advantage for students looking to complete school at a fast pace. Since classes are condensed into shorter periods, students are able to fit more into the school year, if they so desire.
