How to Compile the Results of a Systematic Review

Systematic reviews attempt to comprehensively examine all the possible data in a given subject area, such as medical literature. Researchers conduct systematic reviews using a variety of techniques to address a specific topic in context. One difficulty that researchers often encounter after conducting a systematic review is how to present the vast amount of information gathered. Learning how to compile the results of a systematic review allows you to clearly share the findings and implications of your research.

Instructions

    • 1

Introduce the scope and purpose of your review. Describe the background for your review, such as which issues caused you to conduct the review. Summarize any other reviews that overlap in part or entirely with your research. Provide any definitions or terms that a general reader might not know.

    • 2

Describe your methodology. Include any formulas or processes that you used to extract the information from the data sources. List the criteria by which you analyzed the information gathered during your review.

    • 3

Follow the criteria when organizing the results of the review. For example, if your criteria include "patient age," then provide detailed breakdowns such as frequency of occurrence according to patient age.

    • 4

Repeat until you've analyzed the results of the systematic review according to all of the criteria that you specified.

    • 5

Conclude your compilation with a discussion of the significance of the results. Discuss what inferences you make based on your analysis of the results. Include any additional questions raised by the results.
