The Proper Way to Number the Pages of Multiple Volumes

Dealing with multiple volumes of a publication can be overwhelming, with concerns ranging from choosing article topics to assigning page numbers. Scholarly journals address this latter concern in one of two ways; you can choose which method best fits your needs.

Instructions

  1. Volumes Continuously Paginated

    • 1

Begin each volume with page one and consecutively number the pages through the first issue of your publication.

    • 2

Begin the second issue of your publication with the page number following the last page number of the first issue.

    • 3

Continue to begin each issue of your publication with the page number following the last page number of the previous issue through the end of the volume.

    Volumes Paginated by Issue

    • 4

Begin the first issue of each volume of your publication with page one and consecutively number the pages through the end of the issue.

    • 5

Begin numbering the second issue of each volume at page one and consecutively number each page through the end of the issue.

    • 6

Continue to begin numbering each issue of volume at page one and consecutively number each page through the end of each issue for the remainder of the volume.
