How to Devise a Nursing Lesson Plan

You need specific skills, qualifications and experience to successfully teach nursing students. Nursing is a demanding job that requires personal qualities such as compassion and patience, combined with academic prowess and practical skills. Those who teach nursing have usually done the hands-on work themselves at an earlier stage. They are uniquely qualified to prepare nursing students for examinations and to take their place in health care settings. The criteria for nursing courses are laid down and tutors have to follow a specified module path. Within this, the tutor can devise an appropriate lesson plan for each teaching session.

Instructions

    • 1

Plan your lesson in the context of the module content and also what you have covered in the last lesson. Assess the students at the beginning and end of each lesson so you can discover if any students are falling behind.

    • 2

Set aims and objectives for the lesson. Make the aims measurable. Write down how you are going to assess students' learning at the end of the session. If your lesson is about client confidentiality, for instance, assess the students by asking questions, such as identifying the relevant legislation and describing five occasions where a nurse may breach confidentiality.

    • 3

Include differentiation in your lesson plan. You may have students who learn best in a visual way. Include appropriate activities, such as labeled diagrams and video clips. Aim to make your lesson plan inclusive, paying attention to students whose first language is not English, or who are disabled.

    • 4

Vary the activities so that all students are engaged in the lesson. Include some group work so that students can work as a team; something that is important in health care. Ensure that your lesson plan encourages all students to participate in learning.

    • 5

Link your lesson plan to the students' previous learning. Also link the introduction and the conclusion of the lesson, so that the students can make connection between all they learn, not feel that the subjects are taught in isolation. Include some assessment activities, particularly at the end of the session.
