How to Do a Lesson Plan on Creative Ways of Teaching

Holding students' attention is one of the biggest challenges faced by most teachers. While creative educators use resources such as music, videos or puzzles to stimulate their students and improve their understanding of the subject, some teachers need further guidance in this regard. If you have experience using innovative methods in the classroom, you may use your expertise to help other teachers explore creative ways of reaching students. Developing a clear lesson plan for the training helps ensure that everyone's on the same page.

    • 1

Understand your audience. Find out the needs of the teacher training program participants by having them answer a few questions as part of the enrollment process for your training. Learn what grades and subjects they teach and the common problems they face during their lessons. Know the state requirements and the student demographics in the area.

    • 2

Develop clear and meaningful objectives based on your enrollees' responses to your questions. By the end of the class, your students should make significant changes to their traditional teaching approach and should be able to implement at least five creative but appropriate ways to teach their curriculum.

    • 3

Identify the props and materials you may require to convey creative ways of teaching. For instance, use videos and music to actually demonstrate creative teaching techniques to your students -- showing how certain videos or songs might help teach a certain concept or lesson. Or demonstrate innovative ways to use puzzles as a teaching tool.

    • 4

Write down a brief introduction and the initial steps that will help you achieve your objectives. After briefing your students about the traditional ways of teaching, you may describe the advantages and disadvantages of creative teaching. Highlight the salient points through a digital slide presentation.

    • 5

Conduct a discussion session. Let your students express their ideas for creative teaching in an orderly fashion and discuss the benefits of each idea. Peer discussion is a fun and interesting way of teaching creative methods to your students.

    • 6

Prepare an evaluation or assessment plan. Design a multiple choice questionnaire to test the understanding of your group. You may also ask your students to make a small presentation about creative ways of learning and have them evaluated by peers. Or ask your students to write a brief essay describing the pros and cons of at least five creative methods of teaching.

    • 7

Provide your students with resources such as Web sites and books for further reading and additional information.
