Petroleum Engineer Distance Learning

A petroleum engineer works out on the field -- searching for oil and natural gas, implementing more efficient methods of extracting resources and managing sites. Someone in this position who wants to further his knowledge of the discipline may not be able to take courses taught in a traditional setting. Distance learning is an alternative to enrolling in on-ground courses.
  1. Degrees and Certificates

    • You can earn an advanced degree with an emphasis in petroleum engineering through a distance learning program. Options include a Master of Science, a Master of Engineering and a Doctorate in Philosophy. Certificate programs, which take less time to complete, are also available in specific areas of concentration. As of December 2010, areas for certification include drilling, well stimulation and petroleum engineering principles and practices.

    Schools

    • The Society of Petroleum Engineers provides a list of schools with degree programs in this field. Texas A&M University is one accredited school that offers a Master of Engineering (MEng). As of December 2010, you can complete all requirements for this degree online.

    Continuing Education

    • Career advancement is more easily obtainable through distance learning.

The Society of Petroleum Engineers offers online continuing education classes through their website. On the SPE website, you can also view streaming presentations from past conferences, read handouts from sessions and search for industry training courses.
