Research colleges online for degree programs. There are several colleges that have distance learning degrees in history. The University of Illinois Springfield is one of them. Take note of tuition, length of program and whether you are required to be on campus for any length of time.
Check accreditation. Do not allow yourself to be taken advantage of by a school that is not nationally or regionally accredited. There are certain colleges, like religious universities, that may be able to grant degrees through religious exemption. But if you plan to apply for a job, in some states it is unlawful to list a degree on a resume or application, if it is not from a college that is nationally or regionally accredited. All colleges that are properly accredited are recognized by the United States Department of Education.
Send in an application along with applicable fees once you choose a college.
Send a copy of your high school diploma or GED and order official transcripts from any prior colleges. This way possible credit transfer can be evaluated and applied.
Wait for a letter of acceptance. Most colleges will send you an official letter of acceptance; and once you have been accepted you are free to enroll.
