Cyber School Cons

Online education is a booming industry. Because teaching students in a virtual environment can reduce or even eliminate the cost of maintaining a physical campus, more and more schools are turning to cyber education as a viable alternative to traditional education. But there are both pros and cons to learning online.
  1. Self-Motivation

    • Many people consider learning in a cyber or online environment because of the flexibility it offers. Often you can do the work on your own schedule when you have free time. The downside to this flexibility is that it requires a good deal of self-motivation. Some online educational programs have regular class hours where students meet with a teacher in a virtual environment, such as a chat room or message board. But some don't. Without regular classes to attend, students can fall into the habit of putting off their work to the point of not leaving themselves enough time to do it well.

    Classroom and Campus Interaction

    • For many people, a valuable part of their education is interacting with teachers and fellow students. Many people learn better this way, feeding off of the energy and enthusiasm of those around them. A student does not get these things with a cyber education. Students, particularly younger ones, may also miss out on learning important skills like socializing with their peers. Not having a campus to call home can also discourage students looking for an overall sense of community with others.

Perception and Reputation of Online Education

    • There was a time when an education received online was looked down upon. This stigma has not gone away completely, but it has become reduced as more and more reputable institutions offer classes online. Much of this negative perception can be avoided by ensuring that the school you're considering attending is fully accredited and has a good reputation among people who have attended it already, as well as among those working in the field you're training to enter.

    Technology and Teaching Methods

    • Computers and internet access are more common than ever before. However, not everyone has online access and not all cyber schools teach computer skills. Also, not all teachers will have been properly trained to conduct classes online. As a result, online courses can vary in quality.
