Online Deaf Education Programs

Deaf education is a subspecialty of the special education field. Teachers who work with deaf students generally must obtain advanced degrees in education and specialized certification in their state of residence. Teachers must be able to address various issues when working with deaf students. For instance, some students have learning disabilities because of their inability to hear. Other areas addressed may include curriculum development, ethics and evaluative methods. A number of universities and colleges offer online programs designed to prepare teachers for this certification.
  1. University of Nebraska

    • The University of Nebraska offers an online graduate degree program in deaf education. Students can pursue either a master's degree in the field or simply obtain a teaching endorsement that would allow them to work with deaf children. The endorsement program is suited for students who already have a master's degree in special education but no formal training in working with deaf students. Students must demonstrate proficiency in American Sign Language and complete prerequisite courses before being admitted to the program. Areas of study covered by the program include Psychology and Sociology of Deafness, Audiology for Educators of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH), Teaching Content Areas to Students for the Hearing Impaired and Speech and Language Development of the DHH.

The program for those pursuing a second bachelor's degree simply requires the completion of 12 online courses that are offered in sequence. The entire program can be completed in as little as three or four semesters. Coursework includes studies in Language Assessment and Intervention, Acoustics and Anatomy of the Ear, Assessment and Treatment of Children with Communicative Disorders and Aural Rehabilitation.
